293 Stock Workings, Folkestone line (261)

The following notes are from various observations in February and March 1961.
The workings of sets 80, 86, 266 (or 264 alternative to 266), 277 - 80 and 558 - 60 are fairly constant, but nearly all others are interchangeable.
(1) (a) (see 261 (a)) - down CX, Monday to Friday: the 9.10 a.m. is formed from the 5. 24 a.m. ex Ramsgate; front set is 80 or 86 and runs through to Ramsgate; rear set is detached at Dover, returning 11. 45 a.m. to Ashford, thence to Tonbridge. The 11. 10 a.m. us set 278 plus 558 (set 558 formerly general user but now reserved for the Man of Kent fleet as far as possible) and is ex 7, 26 a.m. Margate - CX; if BR 3-Cor is not available a Maunsell is used. The 1. 10 p.m. down is ex 9. 35 am Margate - CX (up Man of Kent), and the 4. 10 p.m. down is ex 12. 35 p.m. Margate (up Man of Kent).
(b) (see 261 (b)) - 4. 56 p.m. ex Cannon Street (set 279 & BR 3-Cor) is ex 6. 44 a.m. Ramsgate - Cannon Street.
(c) Up Mondays to Fridays: 7. 4 a.m. Margate - Cannon Street is 10-Cor including set of 81 series, 10. 58 a.m. Dover Priory - Charing Cross is formed of set 264 or 266 (rear, ex Margate/Canterbury) and a 4-Cor (front, ex Dover). The Margate portion arrives at Ashford first and is shunted to await the Dover portion.
(d) duties (Mondays to Fridays) recorded as being "Maunsell" rather than other types of set
(i) 8. 54 a.m. Dover - Ashford and 9. 55 a.m. Ashford - CX;
(ii) scratch Hastings set, recently 3686, 5599, 3685 (see item 287) - probably 5. 45 a.m. London Bridge - Hastings; thence 8. 34 a.m. Hastings - Ashford, 9. 30 Ashford - Tonbridge.
(iii) 10. 12 a.m. Tonbridge - Ashford and 11. 23 a.m. Ashford - Margate.
(iv) 8. 47 a.m. Ramsgate - Tonbridge (frequently set 760). (v) 10. 40 a.m. Ashford - Reading. (vi) 10. 33 a.m. Maidstone East - Deal (with 2 SK).
Most of the remaining a.m. turns radiating to and from Ashford, and a similar proportion of p.m. turns (not yet recorded in detail) are B.R. 3-Cor (frequently with an SK (Maunsell)) or Bulleid 4-Cor. The Maidstone West - Tonbridge service is as far as possible PP, but certain turns are 3-Cor (this has been the case for some years; the 3-Cor is usually where through carriage working is involved).

330 Stock workings, Folkestone line

Sets 80 and 86 share and alternate on two turns (a) 5. 24 a.m. Ramsgate - CX and 9. 10 a.m. CX - Margate (b) 7. 04 a.m. Margate - Cannon Street and 6. 21 p.m. Cannon Street - Ramsgate. The 9. 35 a.m. Margate - CX and 1.10 p.m. CX -Margate have been worked by set 554 and BR 3-Cor. The 11. 46 a.m. CX - Ashford has recently been a running in turn for new D65XX locos, solo, and has consequently been formed with dual heated 3-Cor (Note - dual heated stock is indicated in carriage working notices by the letters EH).

386 Kent Coast electrification - Loco - hauled stock workings

The last day of the Hawkhurst branch public services was 10/6. The five coach train ran from 2. 15 p.m. ex Paddock Wood onwards, earlier turns being worked by set 609 only.
The 5. 21 p.m. Maidstone West - Tonbridge is still steam hauled, running through to Redhill (see SG3).
The amount of stock so far withdrawn or transferred away from the SE division is not large. Some transfers were noted in items 367/8. The electrification has displaced, chiefly, long sets. Two former Man of Kent sets remain on business and other workings, the others going to cross-country or inter-regional services (Note: the Man of Kent sets lost the roof boards about May). Most of the Bulleid 4-Cor and standard 3-Cor sets have been retained for the summer but are likely to "go west" in September when the Maidstone East - Canterbury West routes are converted. Some loose coaches have been condemned (see notes below); others remain for the Maidstone line boat trains. The last Maunsell Cor set in Kent, apart from the short "scratch" formations in use on the night Hastings trains, is set 387.
