The 1998 SEmG Bluebell Outing

Sunday, 13th September 1998 witnessed the second SEmG outing to, and convention at, the Bluebell Railway successfully organised by Chris Gardner with Richard Salmon.

As an appetiser on the previous day a smaller expedition to the Isle of Wight Steam Railway had been undertaken by Pamela & Martin Love, Mike Watts, Chris Gardner and Colin Duff.

However, for the main event at the Bluebell Railway SEmG members had arranged to travel from all over the globe - Australia, Austria, Canada and the USA, as well as the home counties and the midlands of the UK. Again our base for the day was the excellently preserved GNR Director's saloon - not Southern we know! - which we hired and was attached to a service train hauled by the Q1. This fortuitously was an appropriate engine, because the Q1 class has previously been voted by SEmG members as their favourite loco.

During the day we had a number of special events:

  • A rare and privileged tour round the loco shop at Sheffield Park guided by Dr. Martin Nichols.
  • A tour round the carriage restoration shops at Horsted Keynes hosted by Richard Salmon.
  • A visit to Horsted Keynes Signal Box whilst in service.

We also held our second AGM, a brief report of which appears on another page.

A good day was had by all - without the friendships of people with a common interest struck up within this internet correspondence group such an outing would never have been possible.
