Topsham

The station at Topsham was opened on 1st May 1861 when the L&SWR's line from Exmouth Junction to Exmouth was opened. At one time there was a short, steep, branch from south of the station leading down to a wharf at the side of the River Exe, though this is now long-gone. Built for a double track route, part of the line was always single with the remainder singled in recent years with just Topsham now retaining two platforms, the loop here allowing a more intensive service to be run than would otherwise be possible. Following the break-up of the railways in the 1980s, this line was operated by Wessex Trains, though was passed over to First Great Western during 2006. Being a station on the so-called Avocet Line, the Avocet symbol appears on the station nameboards.
