Polegate station, like those who use it, is a well-travelled station! First opened in June 1846 when the LB&SCR's Brighton-Lewes-Hastings line came into use, it was situated by the level crossing in Polegate High Street. When the line to Hailsham was opened some three years later the station was on the "wrong" side of the junction so in 1881 it was rebuilt further east, on what was to become Station Road, allowing easy interchange of passengers between the Lewes and the Hailsham lines. The Hailsham (or Cuckoo) line, of course, was eventually extended to Eridge and provided another secondary through route to London, but the economies of the latter part of the twentieth century led first to the route being cut back to Hailsham, the original railhead, and then abandoned altogether. This left Polegate with an inconveniently sited station and, seeing as there was no longer the need to have it there for the Hailsham line services, the station was once again moved in May 1986, this time back to more or less its original position alongside the level crossing. The second station building survives, however, and is today the location for a bar and restaurant complex. This all leaves Polegate as a town with both a railway station and a Station Road, but with them now divorced from each other!

Polegate Looking towards Eastbourne. The line diverging just beyond the train went to Stone Cross Junction, but by the time this picture was taken, it was just a single line engineers siding, subsequently lifted completely.

Polegate This is what the station looked like by September 1985. Quite a change from the above photo! It is now devoid of most of the platform buildings, and with a good crop of weeds alongside the disused platform.
